Indian River Medical Center | Endoscopy Suite Renovation

About This Project

Indian River Medical Center commissioned Stephen Boruff, AIA, Architects + Planners, Inc. to renovate their cramped and inefficient Outpatient Endoscopy Department into a more patient friendly environment which came with several challenges. Located on the second floor of the medical center, the existing suite provided a limited number of Recovery Rooms and outdated support spaces. The renovation consisted of new construction of approximately 4,625 square foot of in-fill on the first floor to provide space for the Department including a new ground floor entrance containing a welcoming reception area, light-filled waiting area, staff break room, men’s and women’s public toilet rooms, and associated support spaces. The approximately 5,800 square feet of renovation on the second floor provides for an efficient and organized nurses station, one new procedure room, expanded scope storage, private consultation room and eight pre/post procedure spaces. The new physical environment is designed to support the intended delivery of care model and address key elements such as the use of natural light, view directly to the exterior, patient privacy, and safety and security. Staff interaction with patients is achieved thru direct visual contact with the Post Procedure Recovery Rooms and bed-side charting insures close contact with the patient and family. Additionally, the effect of materials, colors, textures and patterns in the finish materials were considered in the overall interior design of the new unit with consideration for maintenance and performance. The complex renovation resulted in an intensive use of space achieving all of Indian River Medical Center’s conditions of satisfaction and allows them to serve more patients in a contemporary setting reflective of the quality of care.
